An Unforgettable Trip To The Hospital

On 24th June, Sunday night at about 11.30pm we finally made the decision to admit Isaac to Sunway Hospital. What made us reached that decision is the fact that his fever started to reach the 39`C range again but this time we are afraid that it might damage his brain for the fever has been going on for too long oredi.

On arrival at the hospital, we were attended promptly and as we waited for Isaac’s doctor to arrived, we noticed that there were some 4 to 5 kids roughly the same age as Isaac also waiting at the A & E room. I think nearly all of them also have fever because they have the kool-band stuck to their forehead just like Isaac. Later, a medical officer told us that between 9 to 12 pm that night there were about 15 children who came to the A & E room compare to only 2 or 3 adults. There must be something very wrong for the kids that night.

Doctor Chye finally arrived after waited for about ½ hour with his uncombed hair, I think he just woke up to see Isaac. After examining him, he advised us to admit him immediately. The next thing he did was to administer the IV drip needle. The unsuspecting Isaac was suddenly wrapped up except for his left hand. As the doctor spoke to him, he inserted the needle and this made Isaac screamed so loud that my Mum who is waiting out the room also heard him clearly.(have you ever heard of a pig being slaughtered) Ironically, when he was waiting for the doctor, he asked why is the place so noisy from some kids screaming and crying, now he knows. It took 3 person to hold him down including Ching Pei in the whole process.

After the whole traumatic ordeal, we thought the worst might be over but then the nurse came and said she need to take some blood samples to test for dengue from the other arm. I was like WHAT THE HELL?!!! You want us to go through all that again? She said it has to be done but this time, Isaac was so traumatized that nobody was getting near him. After some persuading and coaxing, we managed to get him on the bed and the whole process of wrapping him up, holding him down and drawing blood from his other arm repeated itself but this time the screaming was even loud and worst. To tell you the truth, tears nearly rolled down when you see your son like being tortured and you can’t do anything about it. He is like saying to you,”Daddy please help me!” but you can only keep watching and do nothing. I can’t describe how much my heart hurts at that moment.

We gave him some sweets to calm him down and waited to be sent to our room. He was so tired that he slept there on Ching Pei’s lap. We carried him to the room and after settling down and asked for a lazy chair for Ching Pei, we left at about 2.30 am.

The next day, Monday, Isaac was told to see an eye specialist because his eyes started swelling and becoming red in colour. The moment we stepped in the doctor’s office, he started to resist and nobody could touch him because of the previous night’s experience. We had to bring him out to have a short walk and to brain wash him. After about ½ hour of sweet talking him, he allowed us to bring him into the office and after the doctor examined my eyes, then only he did his. The trick is that we told him that if he did not get the eye test, he can’t be a pilot in the future.

Thank God that was over but another heart scan is waiting for us downstairs. We were brought into a dark room and the doctor used a small probe to look at Isaac’s heart just like an ultra-sound scan for pregnant ladies. Some toys were brought in to distract him while the doctor did her work but after a long while he started to feel bored and moved around. This made the scan very difficult and Isaac started to resist again. Fortunately the doctor was very patient and promised a lollipop for him after the scan. This made him sat still just enough for her to finish her work.

The reason for all this testing is that he has suspected Kawasaki Disease which the symptoms are high fever, red eyes and lips, rashes, swollen hands and feet and the enlargement of the coronary arteries in the heart. If one person has 4 out of those symptoms, then it is confirmed but Isaac has only got high fever, red eyes and red lips only. Not enough to conclude that he has the disease so the doctors are also confused and have to continue monitoring him.

On the 26th, Tuesday, good news, the fever has subsided and let’s hope it stays that way but he is still being given antibiotics and his eyes are getting better oredi. Ching Pei wanted Isaac to be discharged but the doctor said to monitor him for another day, so tomorrow he can go home. Since Ching Pei has been staying overnight with him for the last 2 days and started feeling not so well herself, it was my turn tonight. So I got ready with my pajamas and everything. We were oredi asleep at about 10pm when the next bed patient had visitors at 10.45pm. They were talking loudly and laughing in Tamil even though they can see that we have switched off our lights. I was wondering why the hospital still let people in at that time of night? It was very inconsiderate of them. After they left, I thought I can get a good night sleep but the aircond was so strong that I was shivering and I woke up to off it. After falling asleep, I felt it was so cold again because the next bed patient’s mom switched on the aircond again. What made me even madder is that his son started to cough very, very loudly and hard because he has asthma and has to use the oxygen ventilator. What kind of mother is this, man? Since I can’t stand the cold any longer, I jump into Isaac’s bed and used his blanket as well. The funny thing is Isaac was sweating like mad and I am freezing my buns off. So we spent the remaining night together on the hospital bed. It’s only towards morning that I could get some sleep except for the nurse coming in to check his temperature every 4 hours.

On the 27th, Wednesday, after the doctor confirmed that Isaac could be discharged, we started packing up his stuff. But we have to return to see the doctor on Friday and for another heart scan in 2 weeks time. We had to wait until 12 noon to be able to pay the bill and to get medicine from the pharmacy. After thanking the doctor and nurses, we made our way back home. After that Ching Pei and I went to see doctor because we have fever ourselves

This whole experience has been surreal and it’s like a dream.(more like nightmare) It has shown us how fragile our body can be and we don’t know what tomorrow has in store for us so have faith in God and put everything in His hands for we can’t do anything without Him. It has also taught us to be patient and not to take anything for granted. It has taught me to love my son and family more and we won’t have forever to be together so make good use of the time now.

I want to thank everyone for your prayers and concerns. We are so glad to have all of you by our sides during this time. I am sure the kids will have the chance to play together again soon.
Please feel free to jot down some comments.

Cheers.

Recovered

We really thank God that Isaac has recovered from the fever and tummy ache. Last night, after taking the Chinese medicine, he pooed-pooed out some really smelly and watery stuff. (excuse me if you are eating) After that, his fever went down and has not come back up till now. Although he sometimes still said that his tummy felt a little discomfort but it’s not very often and now he is like back to his old self oredi. He is running around and playing with his toys instead of lying on the sofa the whole day. What a tremendous change the Chinese medicine made and we are really grateful for it.

Although last night we didn’t really get any sleep and are really tired now, we are very happy that he has finally recovered from this ordeal and hope it won’t have any relapse. We are still monitoring him and boiled some ‘lin yong saei kok’ to relieve any heatiness left in him. We thank you for everybody’s concern and this has taught us to be more patient and to rely on God.

Now we can really get some quality sleep
High Fever

Today is the third day since Isaac’s fever started and it has not subsided yet. It all started very early on Tuesday, around 2.30 am. We were sleeping soundly when we discovered that he’s having a fever so as usual, we gave him paracetamol and continued sleeping and thought nothing of it.

On the same Tuesday, we brought him to the doctor and were prescribed with the same medicine and you guessed it right, paracetamol again. On this day he started complaining of stomach ache and vomited at Sunway Hospital. Doctor said to monitor his fever and it will go away in about 2-3 days time.

On Wednesday, after seeing that he has not recover one bit and his stomach ache got worst, we went to another doctor for a 2nd opinion and this time the doctor said that he has bacteria infection in his small intestines and this causes his gut to cramp every time food or water is taken. He advised us not to give him milk and to monitor his fever. Oh and he prescribed paracetamol, something for vomiting and some supplements.

We went back thinking that this will help him to recover but boy we were wrong. His condition turned worst on Thursday and his fever is still around the 38 ‘C. We decided to wait and see how his condition will turn the next day and we were given the answer that same night. He tossed and turn the whole night saying that his stomach hurts and the fever continued. All of us did not get much sleep and we decided to take him back to Sunway Hospital the very next morning.

This morning on Friday, the doctor in Sunway said that he has wind in his tummy and was not stomach ulcer or intestine twisted like we suspected so he gave us paracetamol and wind medicine. After taking this new medicine, Isaac was complaining of stomach ache even more and his highest temperature recorded was 39.9’C and that got us very, very worried. We called the doctor again for advice and he said that this has been prolonged for too long and told us to admit him to Sunway Hospital. We were reluctant at first but we can’t stand to see our son suffer anymore.

At that moment Karen told us to see a Chinese physician that can cure ‘G mou tan’ and we were desperate to try anything other than to admit him. So off we go to see this lady and she rub some Chinese medicine all over his body and this made him a little better. We were to give him some whitish powder every 3 ½ hours. His fever went down to around 37’C although he was not given any paracetamol and there were less complaining of tummy ache. Well it seems like this is working and let’s not celebrate too soon and keep our fingers crossed.

Handsome or not? This was what Isaac wore as a paige boy for his 'Khau Foo Chai's' wedding recently.

Plenty of girls were 'killed' by his handsomeness during the wedding and an ambulance have to be called in to carry them to the hospital. He told the reporters that he was terribly sorry and regrettable for all that had happened and added that there is nothing that he could have done. He told all the girls to forget about him and not to wait, for they were not his type.

After that minor incident, the wedding went on as planned and he walked up the aisle side by side with his flower girl. All the attention were on them and momentarily the guest forgot about the bride and groom but the spotlights came back to them after realizing that the wedding couple were missing. There were oohhhs and aahhhs when both the paige boy and flower girl threw flower petals on the floor. All in all, he was paid 'handsomely' for his short stint at the wedding.

Unfortunately after saying all this, there were no photos to prove all this because cameras were banned for security reasons. So you have to believe me, would I lie to you? ;)

Happy Father's Day to all dads and dad to-be-again(Kum).

After such a long wait, we finally have the chance to meet up again and it was like a reunion of some sort at McD. We proudly and aggresively took over 5 tables like we own the place. The staff of the place might be saying, "Alamak! here they come again".

Uncle Wai started off by proudly showing off, er, I mean, showing us his Father's Day card made by Ee Jun's CEC Kindergarten which he hanged around his neck. By the way, the card was also sponsored by Esquire Kitchen because it has a sticker on it.(you know, the Valley of Ugly People according to Uncle Nic)

During the reunion, there were people saying like "Wah! so big oredi" and "Aiyo! what have you been feeding him?". It was only like a few weeks that we have not seen each other but the changes of the kids were incredible. The older kids were obviously glad to see each other and they played their hearts out. The younger ones were pampered and passed around among us, the parents. They are waiting for their turn to join in the fun and to create future chaos.

Fei Low is celebrating his first Father's Day and Nic is enjoying his first from his newborn son so this year is considered to be special. Today's outing is a casual one but next week's is forcasted to be a more formal, noisy and expensive one.

How? Pass or not?
Pretty Sai Yee and me.
Side by side.
Beauty sleep.
Three grandchildren.

Be-early full moon day to our handsome boys and pretty girls club newest member, Yim Qi Jun. We had a great time there and not to mention the good food we had too. The weather was just great coz after a big downpour in the evening time, just before the 'makan', made it a bit cooling.

I didn't get to meet the star of the party because according to the star's mum, he was busy catching up with his beauty sleep. Nevermind, next time we'll be able to catch glimpse of him, don't worry. We pray that he'll grow up strong and healthy and make Uncle Nic and Aunty Abby very tired chasing him around.

All the boys and a gal gathered at a table to play and Uncle Man managed to capture them at that moment.
