An Unforgettable Trip To The Hospital

On 24th June, Sunday night at about 11.30pm we finally made the decision to admit Isaac to Sunway Hospital. What made us reached that decision is the fact that his fever started to reach the 39`C range again but this time we are afraid that it might damage his brain for the fever has been going on for too long oredi.

On arrival at the hospital, we were attended promptly and as we waited for Isaac’s doctor to arrived, we noticed that there were some 4 to 5 kids roughly the same age as Isaac also waiting at the A & E room. I think nearly all of them also have fever because they have the kool-band stuck to their forehead just like Isaac. Later, a medical officer told us that between 9 to 12 pm that night there were about 15 children who came to the A & E room compare to only 2 or 3 adults. There must be something very wrong for the kids that night.

Doctor Chye finally arrived after waited for about ½ hour with his uncombed hair, I think he just woke up to see Isaac. After examining him, he advised us to admit him immediately. The next thing he did was to administer the IV drip needle. The unsuspecting Isaac was suddenly wrapped up except for his left hand. As the doctor spoke to him, he inserted the needle and this made Isaac screamed so loud that my Mum who is waiting out the room also heard him clearly.(have you ever heard of a pig being slaughtered) Ironically, when he was waiting for the doctor, he asked why is the place so noisy from some kids screaming and crying, now he knows. It took 3 person to hold him down including Ching Pei in the whole process.

After the whole traumatic ordeal, we thought the worst might be over but then the nurse came and said she need to take some blood samples to test for dengue from the other arm. I was like WHAT THE HELL?!!! You want us to go through all that again? She said it has to be done but this time, Isaac was so traumatized that nobody was getting near him. After some persuading and coaxing, we managed to get him on the bed and the whole process of wrapping him up, holding him down and drawing blood from his other arm repeated itself but this time the screaming was even loud and worst. To tell you the truth, tears nearly rolled down when you see your son like being tortured and you can’t do anything about it. He is like saying to you,”Daddy please help me!” but you can only keep watching and do nothing. I can’t describe how much my heart hurts at that moment.

We gave him some sweets to calm him down and waited to be sent to our room. He was so tired that he slept there on Ching Pei’s lap. We carried him to the room and after settling down and asked for a lazy chair for Ching Pei, we left at about 2.30 am.

The next day, Monday, Isaac was told to see an eye specialist because his eyes started swelling and becoming red in colour. The moment we stepped in the doctor’s office, he started to resist and nobody could touch him because of the previous night’s experience. We had to bring him out to have a short walk and to brain wash him. After about ½ hour of sweet talking him, he allowed us to bring him into the office and after the doctor examined my eyes, then only he did his. The trick is that we told him that if he did not get the eye test, he can’t be a pilot in the future.

Thank God that was over but another heart scan is waiting for us downstairs. We were brought into a dark room and the doctor used a small probe to look at Isaac’s heart just like an ultra-sound scan for pregnant ladies. Some toys were brought in to distract him while the doctor did her work but after a long while he started to feel bored and moved around. This made the scan very difficult and Isaac started to resist again. Fortunately the doctor was very patient and promised a lollipop for him after the scan. This made him sat still just enough for her to finish her work.

The reason for all this testing is that he has suspected Kawasaki Disease which the symptoms are high fever, red eyes and lips, rashes, swollen hands and feet and the enlargement of the coronary arteries in the heart. If one person has 4 out of those symptoms, then it is confirmed but Isaac has only got high fever, red eyes and red lips only. Not enough to conclude that he has the disease so the doctors are also confused and have to continue monitoring him.

On the 26th, Tuesday, good news, the fever has subsided and let’s hope it stays that way but he is still being given antibiotics and his eyes are getting better oredi. Ching Pei wanted Isaac to be discharged but the doctor said to monitor him for another day, so tomorrow he can go home. Since Ching Pei has been staying overnight with him for the last 2 days and started feeling not so well herself, it was my turn tonight. So I got ready with my pajamas and everything. We were oredi asleep at about 10pm when the next bed patient had visitors at 10.45pm. They were talking loudly and laughing in Tamil even though they can see that we have switched off our lights. I was wondering why the hospital still let people in at that time of night? It was very inconsiderate of them. After they left, I thought I can get a good night sleep but the aircond was so strong that I was shivering and I woke up to off it. After falling asleep, I felt it was so cold again because the next bed patient’s mom switched on the aircond again. What made me even madder is that his son started to cough very, very loudly and hard because he has asthma and has to use the oxygen ventilator. What kind of mother is this, man? Since I can’t stand the cold any longer, I jump into Isaac’s bed and used his blanket as well. The funny thing is Isaac was sweating like mad and I am freezing my buns off. So we spent the remaining night together on the hospital bed. It’s only towards morning that I could get some sleep except for the nurse coming in to check his temperature every 4 hours.

On the 27th, Wednesday, after the doctor confirmed that Isaac could be discharged, we started packing up his stuff. But we have to return to see the doctor on Friday and for another heart scan in 2 weeks time. We had to wait until 12 noon to be able to pay the bill and to get medicine from the pharmacy. After thanking the doctor and nurses, we made our way back home. After that Ching Pei and I went to see doctor because we have fever ourselves

This whole experience has been surreal and it’s like a dream.(more like nightmare) It has shown us how fragile our body can be and we don’t know what tomorrow has in store for us so have faith in God and put everything in His hands for we can’t do anything without Him. It has also taught us to be patient and not to take anything for granted. It has taught me to love my son and family more and we won’t have forever to be together so make good use of the time now.

I want to thank everyone for your prayers and concerns. We are so glad to have all of you by our sides during this time. I am sure the kids will have the chance to play together again soon.
Please feel free to jot down some comments.

Cheers.
